Sex Sells

I think a lot of those shows are for entertainment but also trying to sell things. The whole thing with Real Housewives and The Hills is showing how other women and in a way trying to sell to people that that is how everyone should be. It makes girls and women feel worse about themselves and makes them want to be like what they see and watch. Women are portrayed as perfect and if they aren't they look bad. They are trying to sell and to entertain.

In my opinion, shows such as "Desperate Housewives and The Hills" are very much the opposite of portraying the perfect woman. In an episode of desperate housewives that I've seen, one of wives cheated on her husband... Like you said, shows such as desperate housewives are trying to "sell" an image that is entirely flawed.

Agreed. Shows like the ones you mentioned only show super beings aka women who don't eat and men who's job is to work out for the show. Walk outside into the real world not everybody has a six pack(they have demanding jobs and/or kids thus attention to their body is less important) or is a size zero with a perfect physique(the boobs are probably fake when you're a size zero with double d's). Anyway, America is all about sex. It's apparently okay to be a whore, as long as it gets ratings.

Love the title and totally agree. Reality TV shows just try to play off of human insecurities and they do an excellent job of it. And they project things which have become apparent within real society itself.

It seems like these shows are projecting an image of what the ideal life would be like. If we had it all, to do whatever we please, change our bodies, act sleezy because we simply can get away with it, but the reality comes into play when we are shown these peoples' flaws, which are evident, and alot of times alot worse than ours. Maybe that's the appeal of watching these shows, it shows that perfection, the "ideal american lifestyle" is smothered in all the imperfections that haunt our world too. Maybe thats why so many people tune in.

You make a really smart point Bianca, that these shows push a product. This is an interesting way to think about RTV shows as supporting a consumerist society.
