Trash To Treasure

Shows like American Pickers on the History Channel are trying to lure in an older audience mostly men between the ages of 45-60. I think this is true because my dad loves to watch this show. People like my dad become infatuated with this show because I think they like to see the hosts uncover cool old things that remind the viewers about their past. The hosts of the show also make it entertaining to watch when they try to haggle prices low enough so the can buy the old treasure. It is also funny to watch when the owners of the old memorabilia refuse to let any thing go. Some people are so stingy its funny.

Storage Wars and all the shows pertaining to this genre

Storage Wars. Awesome show. Plain and simple. I always rave about shows on A&E and guess what, Storage Wars is on A&E. The show's main audience is anybody who has a curious or competitive side. What is behind these closed storage units?! The show is overly intense with close ups of the auctioneers mouth as he is talking at a rapid fire spit, and for the most part everybody helps the douchebag buyer who raises the price to screw people. It is awesome to see somebody buy a cheap storage unit and come out of it with valuable items that could potentially be worth a lot of money. Very, very entertaining. A&E you have outdone yourselves once again.

Treasure hunters

The infatuation with treasure shows has recently been on an incline. This may have to do with a number of reasons, one being the state of the economy. The economy is on a decline so people may be looking for any way possible to get money from their useless items and they may just be looking for hope. The target audience for this show is probably mainly middle class familys who are trying to save money. Within the middle class family they are probably looking at people in teh age groups of 30-45(parents). What makes the show entertaining is that it is not a perfectly good waste of time like a show like Jersey Shore may be, you may watch this show and leave with some money in your pocket. Also the hosts are quite funny in american pickers. They seem like they know exactly what they are doing. Overall i feel as though these types serve a better purpose in society then most of the other reality TV shows.

Trash to Treashure

The target audience for these type of 'discovery' shows seems to be creative and adventurous people, kind of like how the main characters are. With the economy how it is, people are trying to be entrepreneurs and initiate a career in something never though of before, people want to be unique. These trash to treasure shows are a way in which these people make money from other's waste, which sounds like a good business to me! I think the intrigue caused by the show is what makes it entertaining. As I watched the intro to the first episode of this show I wondered "where are they going to look for trash?" and "what do they do when they find these 'treasures', do they build something or what?" So all of these things draw my attention to the show even though this is the first time I have ever seen this subgenre of reality TV.

CREATE YOUR OWN RTV MAD LIB

We discussed this in class today, but for this week's post I'd like you to create your own RTV Mad Lib. You can use any dialogue from any RTV show of your choice. The funnier the better, but please keep the profanity and ultra-offensive lines to a minimum.

Trash to Treasures

Shows like Auction Hunters, Storage Wars and American Pickers I think appeal to many people that like deals. One guy from Auction Hunter's states "I found a 100 year old Lionel Train set in a unit I only paid $1 for it!" They talk about getting all these things for an extremely low amount of money. People are also going back to the past and seeing old things, and wanting them because they resemble our past. It's also nice to know that you're buying something for less than you know it really is. This show show's you how to barter and makes deals

Treasure Hunting

I think the audiece for shows like Storage Wars are older people who live a lifestyle like the people portrayed in these show. Hoarders and people who are into collecting things could be targeted by these shows. This genre of RTV reaches out to it's intended audience by trying to relate with them. Selling and collecting certain items relates tih their audience. I think these "trash to treasure shows" are starting to become popuar because more and more are starting to like watching these types of show. It's different than your average RTV show which is why these types of shows attract a lot of attention.

pickers

Up until now I had never seen one of these shows but I just watched American Pickers in order to write for the blog. To be completely honest I really do no know what is so appealing about this show and others like it, but I was very entertained by it. Maybe it is because of the US's current economical situation or maybe its just the curiosity that people have for strange or peculiar people. I say strange or peculiar because according to what I could infer from one episode of American Pickers is that most of the collectors on the show are incredibly unique people whether it be physically or in their taste of collections.

One Man's Trash, Another Man's Treasure

This is a great topic! Undoubtedly, there have been an increasing amount of 'trash to treasure' shows popping up around the TV world. Most notably, the Discovery channel has been the source of many shows revolving this new hit genre... From "Desert Car Kings," to "South Beach Classics," and to the leader of the 'trash to treasure,' "Auction Kings," all of which have contributed to inspiring new interests in the old America. In an economical point of view, the source of this new found interest could quite possible be tied to the current recession. As the average household budget goes down, aspirations for whats brand new will become more and more impractical. Consequentially, TV viewers/ consumers want to see something they can relate to in terms of a lower budget.

Treasure Hunting

Treasure Hunting shows are rapidly becoming more and more popular and anyone can watch it. Who doesn't enjoy generating wealth out of nothing? I believe the show is fascinating by itself, but I do think that the economic situation we are in adds to the fascination. More often than not the things in these shows are very unique and sometimes very unusual, which makes watching even more entertaining waiting for something abnormal to be sold.

Treasure Hunting

Quite honestly I think the main audience for these show is older people or people who love antiques and collecting things. Maybe i just think this because I am not interested at all in these types of shows. I think they try and make it funny so its not so boring. Many people like to see what is "floating" around out there such as an old motorcycle. Shows like Auctioneers of cars are targeted toward men but the show Pawn Queens is toward women. They reach out to the audience by getting and showing things that people would want themselves. I never though about this being because of the economy but it very well could be, however they sell the objects they get for very high prices therefore wouldn't correspond with the economy. I have no idea really what makes these show interesting because i don't find them interesting. I do remember watching Pawn Queens once with my mom and a costumer was trying to see his old Vespa and let her ride it. She ended up falling and it was hilarious. Maybe that's why people watch it because they make it commical.

Treasure Hunting Shows

I think everyone gets somewhat of a sense of thrill when treasure hunting. Or even at the thought of finding buried treasure or something of worth. The imagination goes crazy on this subject. It could be getting something for free makes us feel good. Almost everyone when they were a child loved the pursuit of possibly discovering treasure. It could be that the fantasy has been put off until one stumbled upon a show that this is actually happening. Once they see the show, all of these memories and fantasies start to flood back into their mind no matter how old they are. It probably does have some to do with the personalities of the host, but I feel like these shows are so attractive more so because of the items that are brought out of the dark. People interested in history might also enjoy these types of shows because behind every treasure or item their is a story. Most of the most interesting items are the ones that are extremely old and unique.

Treasure Shows

Trash-to-treasure shows are definitely becoming a big hit on TV. This comes to no surprise however, because of the state that our economy has been in the last couple of years. Everyone is looking for away to transform something drab into something awesome at the cheapest price possible. These types of shows are intended for a more adult/mid-aged audience, but are also becoming popular with younger viewers as well. These shows reach out to their viewers by showing them ways to be resourceful, and exemplify the popular saying, "one man's junk is another man's treasure." I think these shows are interesting because of the all of the cool stuff they find or make, and it keeps viewers interested in what they will do next.

Trash to Treasure

Shows like "American Pickers" has generated a rather large audience for such a simple concept. There seems to be a fascination about finding unique items in what some could mistake for trash. Personally, I find these shows more interesting than they should be. I was hooked on the show "Pawn Stars" which showcased numerous historic items which translates into a major concept of American Pickers. There are many fascinating items out there that can be found in trash. Who knew? It sure beats watching a bunch of drunkards act like idiots. Shows like these will never go out of style because they will always generate a genuine interest from the audience.

Trash to Treasure

Recently, a lot of shows about people finding valuable items in their piles of junk have been appearing a lot on TV. Shows like American Pickers and Storage Wars consist of people looking through other people’s trash and finding many worthless items, but sometimes finding something truly valuable (usually after being fixed up first). These shows get the audience involved because you connect with the main stars of the show. They each have a different personality and style, and they make the show more entertaining. The target audience is definitely an older crowd, but I do think that younger people enjoy it as well. These shows are not action-packed, but they are interesting and still provide entertainment. I think people enjoy watching these shows because there are a lot of cool items that show up, and you learn in each episode. I think the state of the economy also plays a part in this because the audience wonders if they too have things sitting in storage that could be worth money now, making what they thought was trash more valuable.

Trash to Treasure

I don't really think that there is a specific target audience for these type of shows becasue I know people form every age group that enjoy them. I think these shows reach out to people because everyone wants to find treasure or turn there trash into cash. People are infatuated with these shows because our society is constantly trying to find ways to make more money or have cool things. People want to be able to show off their wealth to others. This directly related to the economic crisis that our country is recovering from because people that were struggling with money would find these shows very useful because it shows them different ways to make cash fast. I think what makes these shows interesting is the drama that is added to the show, like on Pawn Stars drama is added by making the audience guess at how much an object is worth and there are also family issues amongst the cast that add even more drama.

"Trashy" RTV

Personally I have watched a few episodes of American Pickers and have been rather entertained. However, I believe the target audience is an older crowd, maybe from 30 and up. A lot of the things that they collect are very old, and not many people that aren't old enough don't know what they are or have respect/ interest in the items. I believe there is a sudden infatuation with "trash-to-treasure" shows because of the economic decline... but not necessarily for the reason most would think. Of course part of it is that buying used things or old things tend to be less expensive, but I also think that collecting antiques is a way of going back to the good old days and getting your mind off of the struggles that Americans are going through right now. The shows are entertaining because they let us into someone's actual job, and we get to see antiques that have not been seen in ages. I also think its entertaining because of the "pickers" they have hosting it. I know on American Pickers the two men are very witty and entertaining to watch together.

Digging for Trash

The reason these shows have become so popular is becasue everyone likes wo watch them. The shows appeals to the majority. Many people like this show because it is something new and different. Its not the normal show about young people drinking and partying, it's actually something interesting that people want to watch. These shows reach out to the intended audiences by taking normal people and taking normal household items, and then making a profit, something that is hard to do in this economy. It is interesting because in this economy, people will do anything to make some extra money and this is a very creative way to do so. The thing that makes the shows so iteresting are the characters.

The Appeal of Watching People Buy Trash

Either, they're running out of ideas for reality shows, or people have suddenly developed a fascination for trash, literally. For those of you who dwell under a rock, the television landscape has recently been hit with a wave of trash-for cash shows that are essentially televised garage sales. what makes these shows so intriguing, I have yet to find out. I guess people are interested in knowing what kind of cool gizmo or dusty antique the "pickers" will find next. Not to mention the "pickers" themselves feature personalities that are at times funny, and charismatic. They definitely make these shows less painful to watch. The haggling aspect of these shows also garner some appeal. It makes me curious as to how much money the "pickers" are willing to blow on a withering Atari game console, or something of the sort. Nonetheless, there is a demographic out there, that gladly plaster themselves on the couch to watch shows like Auction Hunters. I suspect the show is watched predominantly by adults, collectors, and even more specifically, antique afficionados.

Auction Hunters

I think maybe the sudden interest in these shows could have something to do with the economy. I think what people find interesting about these shows is how people can turn what appears to be junk into something useful. I think the target audience for these types of shows is older men maybe because they might find it more entertaining to watch. The people on the show are usually men as well so this is why I think it would be targeted for this audience. They may reach out to this audience by what they find and what the producers think would interest the audience. You capture the viewers’ attention is that you never know what they will find. The audience might also find it fun to guess how much the item is going to auction for. If someone enjoys going to auctions they might watch the show to learn more about how much things are worth and get better at auctioning. The show “Auction Hunters” is a perfect example of the auctions that take place and the characterization that attract a certain audience. Episode of Auction hunters.

The New American Garage Sale

In today's modern world we are strapped down to the couch. People are looking for a means to see or do their favorite hobbies, without leaving the couch. For many, many Americans one of the most popular pass-times is to go out to yard sales, garage sales, or flea markets. Here is where a man or woman has the chance of stumbling upon the ancient gizmo, gadget, tool, piece of art, card, coin, book that they have wanted so dearly since they can remember. Alot of times these people love to see old trinkets and tools used by our ancestors, wondering how long it took for this item to become so rusted, and how it was used when it was fresh. Now these trash-to-treasure shows are using American's love of antique shopping to make massive revenues. Many people love to sit and see what kind of strang old tools are dug up out of the human past. The target audience of these shows is adults, and young adults who enjoy gathering, or looking at old pieces of history. The appeal of these shows is not just to see these old items, but its also to get one's juices flowing thinking "hmmmmm i wonder how much that old lantern i have is worth?" We love to see how random people can make a fortune off something old they have kept for so long (or find out they have been carrying a piece of junk!) Also the "hunters" themselves are typically funny, likeable guys who are way too interested in these old objects that we love to sit and watch them talk about them. For a whole slew of reasons these shows are taking off right, but the main reason is that Americans are trash pickers, we love to check out the junk people leave behind for something that catches our eye.

Trash to cash

Americans are progressively enjoying more of these trash to treasure shows because we are always growing more and more nostalgic for our past. We see a toy or trinket that we remember having as a kid and think back to our childhood. We always idolize our childhood regardless of how good it actually was. to quote Patrick Rothfus on nostalgia "The Beer was always better, and the roads less bumpy." We also enjoy finding out the actual value of certain items from our past, and we especially enjoy it when these items are worth an exceptional amount of money. I Also feel though that we really hope we get lucky one day and strike gold while rummaging through the trash. Finally we learn how to properly barter from shows like American Pickers, & Pawn Stars.

American Idol

The purpose of this show is entertainment because it is fun to watch the contestants sing and show their talent on the show. You don’t watch this show to learn anything just to enjoy and vote for your favorite contestant. This show is aired on fox which is a family oriented channel. I think this show was intended for an older audience so that they can vote and keep the show going. But the younger audience may enjoy watching people sing. The adults who watch the show pay more attention to the judges and the singing talent. The mature audience that watch American Idol actually watch for a purpose to find a favorite singer and vote for them every week to keep them on the show. This is a show that a family might sit together twice a week to watch together. The show is structured as a competition. Each of the contestants go up on stage one by one and sing their song then afterwards are judged by each of the four judges. The show does get serious at times during elimination for example. The lighting changes with each song depending on the seriousness of the song. A happy song might have flashing lights and a lot of movement on the screen. For example during the top 13 performances one of the guys sung a country song and there was a country desert scene on the screen behind him to fit his song. Whereas during a love song the lights may dim and there won’t be as much movement and more neutral colors on the screen. During this season on the show when the contestants sang slow songs there were purple and blue lights on the stage. The background on stage moves which keeps the show active and moving. This also keeps the audience interested in what’s going on.

Treasure Shows

Treasure reality TV shows have become a big hit recently. These shows are informative and interesting. With the state of the economy, people are constantly trying to find something that they can hit the jackpot by doing- even if its selling grandma's old possessions. The target audience for the shows is middle aged to older people. But, I think they also attract a younger audience as well. I have watched Pawn Stars a few times and people have brought in samurai swords, ancient trunks, old toys, and many more things. Some of the items appear useless but others are very interesting. The family dynamic on Pawn Stars is comical too. Some of the items that seem useless can end up selling for thousands of dollars. And the opposite can also happen, things that I thought would sell for a lot of money didn't get purchased by the shop at all because of small damages that made the item worthless. The cast of characters and the variety of things brought onto each episode is what makes the show fun to watch.

TRASH TO TREASURE

Zack made an interesting observation in his post earlier this month about "treasure hunting" RTV. He brought to light the fact that more and more "treasure hunting"/"trash-to-treasure" shows are spawning... AMerican Pickers, Auction Hunters, Storage Wars, etc. I watched American Pickers for the first time last weekend and was thoroughly entertained by the quirky duo that makes up the main "pickers." Who do you think is the target audience for these shows? Why? How does this sub-genre of RTV reach out to its intended audience? Why the seemingly sudden infatuation with "trash-to-treasure" shows? Could it be a direct effect of the economic decline? What makes these shows so entertaining? Subject, characterization, bargaining, inventory?

Hard Knocks

I chose the Reality Television show Hard Knocks which airs on HBO
1.) The purpose of the show hard knocks is to put the viewer into the lives of NFL players of a particular team throughout the course of a season.
2.) The audience of hard knocks is most likely aimed at males/ sports fanatics
3.) The speakers of the show are the NFL players, the endorser of the particular episode is the Baltimore Ravens football organization
4.) The genre is Professional/ educational
5.) The show is structured in a way where personal and emotional connections can be made with the athletes as they struggle or succeed
6.) Just as in any NFL video, the music in Hard Knocks is very dramatic corresponding to the situation

http://www.hulu.com/watch/123897/hard-knocks-the-baltimore-ravens-show-1

Dirty Jobs

I chose to analyze the show Dirty Jobs. The purpose of this show is to inform people about jobs they may not have known about or may not appreciate. The host, Mike Rowe, travels around the country and does different “dirty jobs” that people don’t often think about. It is also very entertaining. Mike is very funny and makes jokes throughout the show, getting the audience to connect with him and the people he is working with on the show. The audience is mostly adults. The commercial shown before each video online is for anti-flea medication for pets, which reaches out to an adult audience more than teens. Also, the host, Mike, is an attractive older man, which is appealing for older women. The plot is structured in a way that the audience is watching Mike perform these different jobs and we see the problems he has and his interactions with the guests on the show. He asks them questions, jokes around with them, and helps the audience relate to them. He performs different tasks to show all the different aspects of each job so at the end of the show, the audience feels like they have learned something. The show is filmed in somewhat of a documentary style, which makes it seem more serious and informative, but still entertaining and fun to watch.

Real World

1. The purpose of The Real World is to show how people react when put in unfamiliar situations. MTV uses this as entermainment in order to get a popular show that appeals to a certain audience.
2. The intended audience fo this show is mostly people between the ages of 14 and 22. But some the actual are probably outside this age range.
3. The Real World is endorsed by MTV. There are lots of commercials and previews promoting almost every singe episode.
4.This show is mostly fits into the category of drama.
5.Each season of The Real World has seven to eight people in it that were chosen from thousands of people across the U.S. The members of the show are taped 24 hours a day.
6.Music plays a big role in building up crucial moments of the show. It is used to relate to each scene in the show.

Roadies

Roadies is an Indian Reality TV show. It starts out with auditions for people who are going to be part of the acutal show which consists of how many ever people the judges see fit for the show. The auditons part of the show is my favorite because it basically consists of the judges ripping the contesntants apart about anything bad they have written on the forms that they have submitted. It is really funny to watch.
1. The purpose of the show is to entertain. This is clear by the episode i have given you. The man in the audition(although you may not be able to understand him). He is made fun of for his lack of general knowledge and this is quite hilarious to viewers of the show.
2. The intended audience is really anyone who would find the show funny. But the actual audience ends up being teenagers/young adults because of the people on the show being of the same age and the humor being one that the youth can associate itself with.
3. The author/speaker is MTV India. This is important because MTV India almost always does youth centric shows.
4. The show is almost a game show because after the auditons you have to perform rigorous tasks in the actual Roadies.
5. It is not complex, especially if u have seen a show such as American Idol which has the same judging techniques. But they do try and do stuff differently every season so its not the same.
6. The background music is also very youth centric and everything else is as well.

The Ultimate Fighter

Purpose:
The purpose of the Ultimate Fighter is to give a shot to a fighter in the biggest mixed martial arts promotion. The show is filmed for six weeks and the winner gets a six figure contract for the UFC. The purpose is to give a chance to a fighter who can win his way into a big contract.
2. Audience:
Young males is the audience targeted for this show. It is on spike tv which is known as the men's network. In general males watch it with very little appeal to women. It is a show about fighting, not better homes and gardens.
3. Author:
The show is endorsed by Spike T.V. Other shows on this network are Deadliest Warrior and Manswers. It is a predominantly male-oriented channel that consists of a young male audience.
4. Genre:
Drama.
5. Plot:
The plot of the Ultimate Fighter is a little more intricate than your average reality T.V show. 16 fighters have to fight and win their way into the house that everybody lives in. The fighters are divided into two teams: a red and a blue that are coached by 2 professionals. It is a tournament elimination style. Whoever wins all of their fights gets to advance to the live finale and a shot at a six figure contract.
6. Tone:
The tone is always a little dramatic when the fights are taking place. There is always a lot of tension and a huge buildup to. However, when there is downtime at the house everybody is usually playing pranks on each other which brings about a much lighter tone than fighting.

Real World Las Vegas ep.2

Real World Episode 2

1. To entertain the audience. Because it's not informative really at all. It introduces new characters that people relate to.
2. Teens to young adults maybe from 16-21 years of age is the intended audience. I think hits exactly the right age. the intended and actual audience are the same.
3. Jonathan Murray and Mary-Ellis Bunim. Everything falls on them. If the show sucks or if its amazing. If dirty things happen or not. The success of the show all comes back to the creators.
4. Real world is a reality series based on drama. i think it could go under family because they seem like a family living together and fighting all the time. By the end they all don't want to leave because they became such good friends.
5. The structure is mainly climaxing at the fighting scenes. The drama unfold on every episode. For example when Adam and Nany fight about how Adam doesn't think braking a glass bottle at the club was appropriate in this new episode.
6. They play up to date songs that way teens will be interested. They can persuade them to buy it on something as i-tunes. All of the girls wear expensive cute clothes, which makes you want to go out and buy it too. The font is really bubbly and fun. The camera sometimes will focus in on what the cast members are drinking to try and sell it.

There is a lot of consumerism in this. First off you have to watch a commercial after every ten minutes of the show. In the back ground in this episode it shows a fridge filled with the sundrop soda they had advertised the commercial before. They zoom in to show what alcoholic beverage they are drinking.

Real World Vegas

1. The purpose of the show is to put roommates who are mainly very different in a house and are forced to live together for an extended period of time. This show is purely meant for entertainment and show how certain personalities can clash.
2. The audience I believe is for teens and young adults who enjoy watching roommates fight for no apparent reasons.
3. This show is one of MTV's more popular shows and has been around since the 90s
4. The genera it falls in is entertainment and possibly drama.
5. The plot of the show is real simple. The housemates just have to live with each other and not kill one another. Sometimes the contestants are forced to go to "work" but other than that there is pretty much no structure.
6. The font is a simple and the music is mainly popular mainstream music. It makes the show seem hip and attractive to younger kids.

Intervention

http://www.aetv.com/intervention/episode-guide/
I decided to pick intervention as my show of choice for this assignment.
Why you may ask? Simply because A&E makes very gritty, yet entertaining reality tv shows.
Plus I guess I sort of relate with the destruction that drugs can bring upon a family and/or friends.
This particular episode was about a guy who was addicted pain killers and apparently "loved drugs." The guy was clearly addicted when he couldn't function without the drugs and even went on violent rampages when he didn't get what he wanted.I will discuss 6 key aspects about the show.
1.the purpose of the show is to clearly to inform. How do I know? I don't think they intend for comedic or over the top craziness like Jersey Shore, the makers of the show instead show how depressing life is when you are addicted to drugs, alcohol, etc. and the horrible effects it has not only on the addicted individual but the entire family as well.
2.Intended audience is adults, they like to be informed and can probably relate with the experience the show has to offer.
3.A&E endorses the show, this says a lot because A&E is known for gritty reality tv shows, this show definitely fits the bill.
4.the show fits in with reality and drama. The reality is dramatic, but it isn't meant to look scripted (if it is.)
5.The structure of the show is a different character each episode, it's not episodic. The character always thinks they are filming a documentary on addiction and they are seen doing various questionable acts to get drugs or abuse them. Then eventually the intervention in sues about half way through the episode if not a little farther along. Then we see if the character has progressed since the beginning of the episode through an epilogue.
6.The font of the title of the series is pretty bold, yet bleak, as if to give it that depressing aspect of the show (which is appropriate.) The music is pretty depressing as well and goes perfectly well with the documentary style of filming (one on one interviews, etc.) The tone is a dramatic one.

Pawn Stars break down

I analyzed the it television show pawn stars, and looked for all of the key goals of the show, based off of; staging factors, music, commercials, channel, and structure. The purpose of Pawn Stars is to inform, and entertain. The antics of chumlee, and the wacky items that enter the store provide for the comic relief. While the experts and negotiating aspects of the show focus on informing us. I can confidently say Pawn Stars is directed towards parents, and adults. The grandfather "pops" tends to swear like a sailor (he is an ex sailor), the music is a vintage rock rift, and the main content of the show, (the items and negotiating), would not interest any child, but instead applies very much to an adult. The commercial advertising is from Disney, Red cross relief efforts for japan, Degree anti-perspirant, and life insurance policy. These are all clearly aimed towards parents, and older people. It is filled with snarky commentary by the son, and is shown on the history channel. It is narrated by Rick, who is middle aged, has children, and is incredibly intelligent. Pawn Stars is best classified as an educational show. Pawn Stars follows a similar formula each episode; first, the primary items are presented, then the secondary items are presented then bought or not, then an expert returns and the primary items are evaluated, and assessed, then that trade is either made or broke, finally there are some snarky back and forth between cast members. The show is framed in a very serious manner. There are even educational sub texts during the show.

The Real World: Las Vegas

Episode 2

1. Purpose:
This is your typical reality tv show, in which they film everyone in a house just so you can see the drama everyone goes through. This is evident because as they presented the season trailer, it showed all of them hooking up or fighting as dramatically exaggerated as could be.
2. Audience:
Teenagers and young adults are the primary target audience for this show. These people will be more attracted to the lives of these roommates as they drink and party.
3. Author:
The show is endorsed by MTV and this is significant because judging by other shows on this channel (Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, etc.) one can tell that the audience for this show is teenagers and young adults.
4. Genre:
Drama.
5. Plot:
The structure of the plot does not look too complex, it is your typical reality tv show where they televise the behaviors of these roommates as they misbehave and cause trouble within the house as well as outside in the open.
6. Tone:
The tone in which this film is set is pretty much laid back and just relaxed, exemplifying how open-minded and easy going these people are. At the same time there is a buildup of tension due to the expected drama that is about to unleash.

The Amazing Race

I chose to analyze the amazing race. I have only watched a couple seasons since it has been on, but I would love to be on it someday. Plus there is actually a goal and purpose in mind which is nice.
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/
1) I think this show is mainly about appeasing your desire for adventure and excitement. A lot of people watch purely for the entertainment aspect of it. Only a few people actually get to experience this show, and watching this show lets people feel like they are getting close to experiencing the thrill of bungee jumping or sailing. People want to do this so they watch it.
2)Well you have to be 21 to be on the show so it is definitely targeted more towards adults. But not just young, in-shape adults, many teams consist of a older father or mother and their child. This show captures those who want to live on the edge through fierce competition and thrilling activities.
3) Jerry Bruckheimer produced the show which somewhat automatically got people interested because of his successful film career. A lot of sports car commercial also sponsor the show further appealing the thrill-seeking audiences.
4) The Amazing Race is considered a game show; perhaps one of the longest game shows. It is literally a race around the world for 1 million dollars and the experience of a lifetime. Personally i would give up the 1 million dollars just to travel to all those places.
5) The plot structure is not complex at all. It is simply competition among teams in a race for a million dollars. However, certain twists like u-turns are thrown into the game to instigate drama occasionally.
6) Overall the show is very professional aimed at adults. Most of the challenges and obstacles are fun because everyone wants to have fun no matter how old you are.

Oh and Another Thing,,,

I found this article on Yahoo! today and thought it was pretty relevant to our blog :) Its about the shows that are currently casting and how to make yourself more likely to be picked to be on the show.

Reality Show Castings

<3 :)

Bad Girls Club, Exactly what it sound like

Bad Girls Club is exactly what it sounds like, girls together in a clubhouse actin bad. This show is another production of the the creators of The Real World. Bad Girl's purpose is much the same to that of the Real World, showcasing drama. The characters are pulled together so that they will ultimately clash, and clash they do. The show is full of drama, throwing girls clothes in the pool, calling the police, drunken fighting. The whole time narration and dialog is focused on the bickering. The fact that this show is made by the creators of The Real World says alot because the set up is very similar, throw a bunch of different people in a nice house with cameras and let them fight. The intended audience is defiantly teen women, and young adults. The women are showcasing their glamour and beauty, nice clothes, and partying. This is young adult material, but show reaches many teens as well. The structure of the show is very simple, a group of women are living together in this mansion, new "Bad Girls" are introduced every once and awhile, and we follow the daily events and drama between the women. Montage editing with the newest hit music keeps people interested, and showcases stores, clubs, brands, and drinking. The fanciful font in the beginning makes it feel fun and childlike, although its really not. Also this is giving a bad example of women, given the title is Bad Girls Club, why is this season six? How much money are these women making? How much money is being spent for this staged dramatic "reality" situation to be aired.

The Bachelor Finale

I chose to analyze the final episode of this season of The Bachelor because I have been following the entire season and am very familiar with the show. Here is a link to the episode: http://abc.go.com/watch/the-bachelor/SH559030/VD55117295/week-10-part-1
In the final episode, Brad gives 'the final rose' to one of two girls, Emily or Chantal, to chose who he wants to ask for his hand in marriage .

1. purpose of the show
The purpose of The Bachelor is to show the process of how one man chooses a girl within the span of 10 weeks to find a fiance. The show is watched by viewers because of the entertainment of watching the girls fight for the bachelor's love.
2. audience )
The intended audience of this show are viewers in their 20s-40s. This is evident because that is the age of the bachelors and bachelorettes that are on the show. Because it is a dating show, I believe the audience is more for woman than it is for men. This can also be proven by the fact that there were commercials for woman's Dove Body Wash during the show.
3. author/speaker
The network the show is on is ABC, which is known for having shows that pertain to adults, and the Bachelor is no different. The network caters to a very broad audience, but the Bachelor fits in very well with other ABC shows.
4. genre
The genre of the show would fit into the dating show category of reality tv.
5. structure
The structure of the show is fairly complex because it goes through a lot of different elements to get to a final result. The bachelor goes on group dates, one on one dates, talks with all of the girls, and finally picks which girls are sent home every week until he gets to the finale.
6. look at other elements such as font, film style, music, etc. how do these things affect the overall tone of the show?
Every so often, each of the contestants will have a confessional taping, where they are one on one with the producers and answer questions. This is used to add a more realistic tone to the show because it tries to portray what the girls are really feeling. The music on the show is very dramatic, especially during elimination ceremony, which makes them more intense.

Jersey Shore

I decided to watch the infamous RTV show, Jersey Shore. I watched last week's episode where the cast gets into a huge water balloon fight, Vinny gets his ears pierced, Mike slacks off at working the T-Shirt store and Sam and Ronnie get into another argument to end the show.

http://www.mtv.com/videos/jersey-shore-season-2-ep-25-a-house-divided/1660103/playlist.jhtml#series=2211&seriesId=29241&channelId=1

1. This show is made solely for entertainment. There is no informational value to watching 8 idiots running around New Jersey, while getting drunk and acting crazy.
2. The audience is for people in their later teens and 20s. We know this due to the type of activities they participate in, such as going out to clubs and getting drunk and doing foolish things. Along with the music played during the show and the commercials that are shown. Another indicator of audience is the language they use. Hearing a bleep every other minute, as bad as it is to say directs towards that age group. Also, the amount of sexual content displayed in the show also aims toward this age group.
3. MTV endorses the show. this is significant due to how it is aimed towards the later teen and twenties age group and also allows them to have a lot of freedom of what exactly to put on the show that you would not normally see on a family network type channel.
4. I think that the categories that show fits into would be comedy and a drama. The show is definitely a comedy through all of the little saying and actions that go on in the house. Between Pauly D yelling out constant phrases, to water balloon fights, to talking about grenades, and more, when you watch Jersey Shore you always can expect to be laughing. At the same time, this show is a drama. Mostly due to the fact of the relationship of Sam and Ronnie and their constant fighting and bickering, but there are other moment of drama in the house between roommates or when Vinny is going to get his ears pierced.
5. The structure of the show is one that is unique. Although it does sometime seem spontaneous, I think that there is a pattern. In the show they display a recap in the beginning, solve that drama that drags the viewer in to watch the show. Then follow it with the common but humorous events and actions of the group during the middle of the episode and finally end it with extreme suspense, making you wanna come back the next week to find out more.
6. The font and music both portray a kind of young and partying good time feel. The font is only really used introducing the characters and when they speak. The music is used to appeal to the younger audience. also the film style is one that follows every one of the casts steps they make while in the house. These make the overall tone one that is made for the show is for pure entertainment for the viewer.

My Super Sweet 16

My Super Sweet 16

I chose this show because I believe this is a good point of unrealistic reality television. Although some people may live this way, most of the people that watch the show do not. I chose this episode specifically because the girl throwing the party, Cher, is from my hometown of Palm Harbor and I was actually supposed to go to her party but I wasn't allowed to, so I figured it would be cool to analyze her episode :)

1. I think the purpose of the show is purely for entertainment. The fact that it is on MTV is a big indicator, and also I do not see any true personal gain of knowledge or change of life view from watching.
2. The audience of the show is geared toward teenagers and very young adults. Once again, it is on MTV and the "characters" shown in the show are typically between the ages of 14 and 18, which signals that there are more people from that age group watching.
3. The author/ speaker of the show is the actual person who is having the party, making us able to get more into their point of view. MTV loyal viewers are likely to watch anything MTV provides them to watch.
4. I think the genre of the show is kind of drama, and kind of documentary. It shows drama that goes on in these people's lives, and shows teh struggles they have with their parties. As well as documenting their whole party-planning process.
5. I believe the plot is rather simple. It shows the progression from the initial theme choosing to the full-on party and the end result, which is the climax. The stucture of course includes statements and complaints from the spoiled birthday girls.
6. The font and style is Louis Vouitton with glitter and sparkles, which is meant to attract teenage girls. It makes the whole "classy and rich" part of the show attractive. It may make girls think "If I watch this then I will be classy and rich." The music is Hilary Duff, who is known to be a tween and teen star. The overall tone of the show is girly, richy, and stuck up.

Jersey Shore Analysis

I decided to analyze an episode of Jersey Shore because it is full of different plot lines and issues that can be further analyzed.
http://www.mtv.com/videos/jersey-shore-season-2-ep-25-a-house-divided/1660103/playlist.jhtml#name=shows
1) The purpose of this show is to entertain the audience. I know this because it is aired on MTV which is a tv station whose main goal is to entertain its audience with drama-filled shows. The show itself has no educational purpose and is not meant to inform the audience and a particular issue/topic.
2)The target audience of this show is teenagers and young adults and this is consistent with that actual audience of this show. This age group is the audience because the cast of the show are young adults and it focuses on topics such as drinking, partying, and relationships. All of these topics are watch most young adults in the real world face so the audience can somewhat relate to the cast of the show.
3)MTV is the station that endorses this show which is important because that tell the audience that this show is meant for young adults and there are not educational benefits that will be taken away from watching the show. Like I said before, MTV is a station for pure entertainment.
4) This show can fit under many different genres, but two main ones are drama and entertainment. It fits under drama because there are always fights and tension between the roommates and other people that appear on the show.
5)I think the plot of the show is partially complex because it is following the lives of seven different people living in the house and shows all of the issues that they have to deal with. The show continues over a series so story lines are followed throughout the whole show making the plot a little more complex.
6)The font, filmstyle, and music on the show make it have a tone that is likable for many young adults. The music is very modern caters towards the younger population of people. The filmstyle of the show is very funky and unique which makes it even more likable by the younger crowd.

Survivor

I chose the show Survivor. It is a show that I still like to watch. Even though the story line stays the same season after season, the challenges and characters change. It's always something new and interesting that holds my attention.
1) The purpose of the show is to win the game. It is to outlast everyone else and win the money. By playing the game and getting the most votes at the end, wins the money.
2) The audience is a wide variety. It really can be for all ages. Most likely though, it is geared toward men since there is a part of if showing off the manly man doing the challenges and doing all the work.
3) Jeff Probst is the host of the show. Even though he does provide commentary, the actual contestants on the show do have commentary throughout the show by having one-on-one interviews.
4) It is a game show.
5) The plot is structured around the characters, the challenges, and the elimination. The show starts off with people talking about the elimination, then the challenge, more talk between the characters, then elimination. And the process repeats.
6) The music does try to set the tone for what is currently going on or what the dialouge is. The font on the screen does try to fit the tribal writing.

"Intervention" Analysis

http://www.aetv.com/intervention/video/?bcpid=741496469001&bckey=AQ~~,AAAAAEK2ejU~,Ai-tVL3JZg14qmRc-bdu-QuDc8uNg81L&bclid=823019406001&bctid=825824569001

This particular episode of "Intervention" chronicles the life of a former beauty pageant contestant and dancer, Tiffany. Her addiction to methamphetamines and antidepressants has her family questioning whether she can support her innocent baby daughter. Her family eventually hits boiling point and it seems the only way to stop Tiffany's spiraling is through a full fledged family intervention.
1) The purpose of the show is evidently to create awareness of drug addiction and it's effects on both family and the individual.
2) The intended audience, I supposed, are adults, perhaps parents who are also struggling with a drug addicted child or family member.
3) The show is aired on A&E, which also hosts a variety of similar reality shows and dramas. Considering, "Intervention" is an exceptionally honest and dramatic reality show, it fits in perfectly with the line up of shows broadcasted on the channel.
4) "Intervention" is unquestionably a drama. There are no jokes, or action scenes in this show, only raw emotion and serious situations are depicted.
5) The plot of the show is relatively simple. The show begins with the background of the addict and is followed by the everyday ongoings of the individuals life. The show eventually culminates with the intervention of the drug abuser.
6) The show sets the tone with a dark, stirring orchestra that washes in over the more emotional scenes. Instead of a narrator, the show lets the audience read information in silence from a black screen only interrupted by few white fonted sentences. All intended to invoke an emotional response from the audience.

The "Wild" that isn't on Jersey Shore.

The RTV show that I have decided to analyze is Man vs Wild.
Now, the clip is only a 2 min excerpt and it may gross you out. It's Bear Grylls in the desert, and it is an excerpt/commentary on him surviving/cooling off by drinking his own urine so don't watch if you don't want to.

http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/man-vs-wild-urine-as-hydration.html

1. Purpose- It is used as a means to educate and raise awareness of what to do in the wild. In this episode/excerpt Bear Grylls is showing us tips and tricks of how to maintain and sustain when stuck in the desert.
2. Audience- Due to the fact that when things rough, you gotta rough it up also, I feel the audience is geared more towards males rather than females. This excerpt especially shows how "rugged" things can get as Bear ends up drinking his own urine and sometimes people (more so women than men) get grossed out about stuff like that.
3. Author/Speaker- Discovery channel is the one who broadcasts this show. I feel like they tend to put on shows which can educate, even if the information is quirky. Discovery channel, discovering things, self explanatory, need I say more?
4. Genre- Genre?... well, I guess it is adventure? or outdoors/wilderness? not sure if that IS a genre...
5. Structure- The filming is done by a camera man but also Bear Grylls himself as well. Both a third person view as well as a first person documentary style show. I feel they do this to emphasize an individual's thought process and help put the message out about how you will be ALONE most likely; also adds to rugged adventure-y type feeling of the show.
6. Font- Rugged, expresses the ruggedness of the show. Brings out the inner "wild" side in a person by making the font rugged as well. You definitely wouldn't want pink letters as it would detract from the show.

Rob and Big

http://www.mtv.com/videos/rob-and-big-season-3-ep-11-meatys-birthday-meaty-turns-fourteen/1583703/playlist.jhtml#series=2211&seriesId=20692&channelId=1

This episode of Rob and Big is just another day in the household of Rob Dyrdek, but this day happens to be "Meaty's" fourteenth birthday (2nd in dog years). This episode shows the preparation and execution of the best doggy birthday party ever along with Big Black "going green" and starting to use and reuse food oils to run his car.

1. The purpose of this show is to entertain, not much else can come out of having a birthday party for a dog, or deciding to go green with your car.
2. The audience of this show is teens/young adults and skateboard enthusiasts who like Rob Dyrdek, or just anyone who enjoys the spontaneity and enthusiasm of Rob Dyrdek.
3. MTV runs this show which right off the bat tells you that it is intended for teenagers and young adults.
4. Rob and Big is just the everyday life of two individuals doing random things such as breaking world records, having a birthday party for a dog, and lots of pranks.
5. The plot is just spontaneous, whatever Rob wants to do, yet each episode always seems to have one central task to expand upon.
6. The overall tone of the show is definitely geared towards the teens with the ever so often use of profanity along with the music, and for the simple fact that it airs on MTV.

The overall tone of the show is lighthearted because Rob is a kind individual and usually tries to help someone else in each episode, even though he does tend to play a lot of pranks, especially on Drama, his cousin/personal assistant.

Holly's World

Last night I watched an episode of "Holly's World." This is a show about the previous playboy bunny, Holly Madison's life after she left Hugh Heffner and his whole ordeal. The purpose of this show is to entertain, and also to those who care, inform where she is in her career. The audience is mostly females, young adult range. Holly runs the show and directs everything, she doesn't control other people's actions but she is the main one making decisions in the show. It's a lot of drama, it's mostly models or playmates and they are usually bickering over something. The plot is structured around Holly and her other cast mates gigs. Whether it's modeling, or commercials or what not. It's on the network E, therefore it's made for entertainment. It's directed towards younger people who are about this kind of stuff and enjoy keeping up with peoples lives.

RTV Episode

http://http://www.mtv.com/videos/jersey-shore-season-2-ep-24-gym-tan-find-out-who-sammi-is-texting/1659569/playlist.jhtml#series=2211&seriesId=29241&channelId=1
I watched the most recent episode of Jersey Shore to analyze. The purpose of this show is purely for entertainment. There is constantly drama that intrigues the viewers. The target audience is older teens and people in their 20's. We know this because the show is on MTV and the characters in it are in their early to mid 20's. In addition, the commercials are also geared towards a younger audience. There are condom commercials and commercials for cheaper hybrid cars that save money on gas. The language used on the show is also foul and many older adults could be offended by this and in the episodes they show a lot of sexual content. The music played in the background is new and caters to a younger audience. Unfortunately, many younger kids watch this show and are probably learning bad habits such as drinking in excess, violence, and negative stereotypes about women.
In this particular episode Vinny and Pauly D go to visit Vinny's family in Staten Island. This does show good family values. We also see the cast sit down and eat dinner all together. In addition, we see the crew "GTL" multiple times. This acronym has become a cultural phenomenon. Comedy is used in the show. At one point the girls bombard the boys with water balloons and Deena slips on the wet floor from the mess that they created. The boys then get the girls back even worse with water balloons. They eventually put on trash bags and attack each other. The main drama in this episode is that Ronnie finds out that Sammy has been texting another guy. This drama last for the majority of the episode.

ANALYZE AN EPISODE

For this week's blog I would like you to do an exercise similar to the one we did in class today. Pick an online episode of any RTV show of your choice. Watch it and analyze. Include the link to the episode in your post. Go down the list we covered in the analysis powerpoint. I want you to begin by looking at things such as audience, characterization, purpose, genre, structure, etc. You might notice things we talked about in class such as stereotyping, gender, class, or race issues, evidence of consumerism, etc. Remember to provide evidence! give details from the episode that prove your conclusion for each category.
Identify/Analyze:
1. purpose of the show (prove it...how do you know this?)
2. audience (you might identify the intended audience vs. the actual audience)
3. author/speaker (who endorses the show? why is this significant?)
4. genre (what category does it fit in? game show, family show, drama, educational, about a profession?...)
5. structure (look at how the plot is structured. is it complex? how do you know? prove it with details from the show)
6. look at other elements such as font, film style, music, etc. how do these things affect the overall tone of the show?

Treasure Hunting reality?

I have noticed that there is progressively more treasure hunting reality TV. Shows like American Pickers, Auction Hunters, Desert car kings, and my favorite, storage wars. These shows focus on individuals gambles in order to turn a profit. Unlike Pawn Stars however, they have to go to different people and places; where Pawn Stars has the people come to them. These shows are like gambling because there is very little known about many of these gambles. We the viewers tend to not only learn from these shows, but still remain intrigued by each episodes bizarre twists.

reality actors

People who are making a living in the reality TV industry can hardly retain the argument thats we see ourselves in them. The amount of Americans who can say they have starred in a reality TV show, make a very slim amount of the population. It would be very hard for the common man to say that he frequents celebrity talk shows, has cameras follow him around his home, or has millions of people watch his private life? When all is said and done people who put themselves on multiple talk shows become a breed apart from the rest of us.

Professionals?

I don't think there are professional RTV stars. If someone appears on more than one tv show i just think its because the producers saw that a lot of people watched the show and followed the star. If they star that person in their show hoping to attract viewers who might watch the show because they have seen the person in a different show and are curious as to what role they are going to play in the new show. I'm sure they have more experience but i don't think it makes them a professional. There are so many different types of reality tv shows that they most likely wont even reappear on a similar show. I think it depends on how you view reality tv show and whether you think its scripted or unscripted. If it's unscripted wouldn't it mean the star couldn't be a professional because they dont know whats going to happen?

Professionals?

I don't think there is such a thing as a professional reality T.V star. A profession is something that requires skill, and there is no actual skill in being a reality star. Granted, some stars are bigger than others, but they don't possess anything that sets them aside. They just have a bigger fan base that will help prolongate their stints on television. You can't call someone a professional for being themselves in front of a camera; that doesn't require any skill.

Professional RTV Stars

I believe that there is such thing as a professional RTV star. There are many RTV stars out there that apperar on different reality shows mostly for the money and fame that they get out of it. Like on the Real World Challenges many of those reality stars appear on numerous challenges just to earn as much money as they. Others on the show say they miss hanging out with their fellow cast members since some don't really see each other that often outside of the show. I think that other RTV stars who do a lot of reality stuff because they got use to being in front of the camera. Some stars think of it as their way of of life.

Why change if it works?

I don't necessarily feel using the term "Professional" is the correct way to describe what is being discussed here. I feel the better way to describe what holly wood is doing is to see the big picture... If something works, why would you change? If a reality TV actor/character does well and brings in the "BIG BUCKS", I don't see a big "WHY NOT?" in trying to keep the viewers/their money, by adding little twists to the show or character. If they already have a viewing fan of x amount of people, why not utilize what you already have instead of taking a step backwards and setting up a whole new show with new characters. Also, there is not necessarily a "IS THIS FAIR" question to ask because in reality, who cares. Even if you are an actor, I don't think you would be trying to get a job as a REALITY TV artist. If you get the job, awesome, if not, don't be disheartened, there is something better waiting for you. :)

Repeat Offenders

I don't think there is such a thing as "professional" reality tv star, but some definitely provide more entertainment than others. One show / person in particular that comes to mind when I think of repeat offenders is the whole Laguna Beach / The Hills craze. One month I was watching an episode of Laguna Beach because Lauren Conrad is incredibly good looking and then all of a sudden not too long later there she was on her own new show called The Hills. While nobody may have known this girl before Laguna Beach, they definitely knew about her before the premier of The Hills.

Professionals

I think that there are definitely "Professional" reality tv stars. For example on the show THe Bad Girls Club, a girl known as natalie has shown up in multiple seasons of the show after her season had aired. Also many dating shows have run-off shows with the person that wasn't chosen. For example, in the show called the Flavor of Love a contestant known as New York wasn't chosen by Flavor Flave, so VH1 gave her a dating show of her own to find "true love". I think is depends on the type of show to say that these people affect the "realness" of the show. I don't this this is either fair or unfair. If certain people brong higher rating to a show then the network would obviously want to bring them to other shows to make those ratings higher as well.

enjoying shows because you can relate

There are definitely certain shows that people watch because they can relate to them in some way shape or form. Those shows like "Hoarders" and the addicted to something shows, those shows are serious and people get a glimpse of how others respond to something like that. Shows like Keeping up with Kardashians is not a show that all people can relate to in the big sense of it but in the little sense of family, and how they are close together as a family and the way they act with each other, that can be related to. Many people enjoy watching something that they can see themselves doing or can picture themselves in because it's easier to understand in a way. You can compare your problems with theirs.

Professional Reality Star

I don't know if there is such a thing as a "professional" reality star but there is definitely such a thing as a trained and very good reality star. They take people from certain reality shows and give them their own show all the time. New York from Flavor of Love got her own show. They are giving Snooki her own show. They take the most entertaining people on shows and let them have their own so they can continue to be amusing the community.

Repeat offenders

Yes, I think there definitely is repeat offenders, but I do not think that they can be classified as professional actors or actresses. I annoys me how the same players get asked to come back for a second chance on shows. Like in survivor, multiple players gets asked to come back. I think it dumb. They got their chance and already got to experience the show. They are taking up someone else's spot thats never experienced the show. This also happened in the Amazing Race. There are so many other people who want to get a chance to run the race, but they decide to invite people back that have already ran it and lost!

RTV Stars...Repeat offenders

I think in the beginning these stars are just real people and as they get on camera they start to act and not be themselves. Then other producers like their personality and book them for other shows. Now does this make them a professional reality tv star. I think if you have been on two shows you pretty much become professional at the whole reality tv seen. There is many RTV MTV stars that host other shows on MTV. I guess this makes them a little more professional. But what is professional defined as in this question? Wiki say A professional is a member of a vocation founded upon specialised educational training. Do you think all these stars had educational training to do their job...to be on jersey shore..NO....to be on The bachelor..NO.so in conclusion i dont think any are professional!

Professional RTV Stars

Yes, I definitely do think there is such thing as a professional RTV actor. Those who love the attention and want to become big in hollywood try to land as many reality TV shows as possible, and play up their role to whatever they think will make them famous. The cast on Jersey Shore is now on their third season, and all of the cast sure know how to act the way to have to to maintain their popularity. 'Professional' reality TV stars do take away some of the 'real' in the show, but people watch them regardless.

Reality temporary "stars"

On television, there are plenty of shows where a "reality television" aspect can be assessed... Most times, reality television shows introduce characters who have never appeared on television before. Consequentially, with the characters on the show not having any reputation as actors or anything of the like, it makes the action more believable. However, i do not think there is such a thing as a "professional RTV star." Anyone could jump on the set of "Jersey Shore" or "Survivor" and provide the world with entertainment.

Acting Real

The people on RTV shows are "real" people. They are chosen to be on the show because they have the ability to make it entertaining and create a desire for people to watch it. The people are chosen for their behavior and their personalities. It wouldn't be fun to watch Jersey Shore if there was no drama or fighting. It is because of the personalities clashing on the show that we watch it. At the same time though, the characters are playing things up and acting in a sense because they are creating drama and an interesest in the show. I dont think that they are considered professional actors because they are on an RTV show. The majority of time, if they do appear on another show, it is an RTV show and they are there because of thier personality.

All they know is how to act...act "real"?

Let's think about this phenomenon for a moment. People go and star on one of these shows like "The Real World." They get a taste of the money and the free ranging lifestyle of playing yourself for the camera. You get to take every one of your emotions, every little aspect of your life, and blow it out of proportion. As a matter of fact, the producers want you to blow every situation up and out of proportion. They will place you in a situation where you start to act not like your real self, but the self you put on for the world. The self that is being paid to be right there, for the sake of being film. The self knows this, it knows that your being paid to "act" like youself in front of this camera. As a matter of fact that's how you are surviving, "acting real". Now what happens when the show is over, and the money flow isn't coming in, and your kicked out of your "Real World Crib". Then what? what's the easiest way for you to survive. How were you just doing it? By acting for the commercial world out there. So what do you do, try and sign up for the next biggest show with the cash flow, and ability to "win big" this time around so maybe you won't end up on another show later. But what happens to these people? Its like those in prison for too long...institutionalized. But these men and women, are institutionalized by their own aspect of reality, the TV reality, the reality TV. Having a camera always in your face reality. The camera beomces your reality, and it becomes how you define yourself in relation to the world. You get stuck, and all you know is how to act, act "real" for the camera. In all reality its simply drama. And we find these people "real", hah they're lifestyle is a product of corporate america, materialism at its best.

A new breed of actor: Professional Reality Star

How many spin offs did "New York," from the "Flavor of Love" reality series, star in? 5, maybe 6 shows, before we finally got enough of her. However she isn't the only one with multiple reality shows under her belt. There's a sort of trend happening in reality tv that has popular reality characters crossing onto various other reality series'. But coining these recurring RTV personalities "actors", considering they're supposed to be "real" people, just wouldn't be right. Therefore, it would only be fitting that characters like "New York" or Mike "the Miz" Mizanin, be officially titled and classified as "Professional Reality Stars." A new hybrid of TV star that isn't quite actor and isn't, technically, your ordinary joe. So I guess, not every reality show's cast is comprised of "real" people. Some of them have experience.

Repeat Offenders

There are some reality tv stars that have been in more than one show, but I wouldn't consider this an offense. Just because Snooki from Jersey Shore was on Is She Really Going Out With Him? does not mean that she can't also be in a house and show us how stupid yet humorous she actually is. I wouldn't really consider these people professionals at RTV, but if other enjoy seeing you and consider you entertaining then keep on doing what you're doing! Why stop if you are getting fame or money out of it? I sure wouldn't!

We Don't Always Relate To It, Yet We Still Like It

Not everyone can relate to Extreme Makeover where people volunteer to rebuild the house of people in need, or to Jersey Shore where all they do is drink and party everyday; however, relating to the characters at a personal level is not always the reason why we watch reality television. Some people like to see how the rich and famous live, dress or spend their money, so they watch Keeping Up With The Kardashians. It is interesting for some to see the real life of celebrities and that they are not just icons created by magazines and media. Others might enjoy shows on VH1 and MTV just because they are funny. Not many people watch those dating shows like Flavor of Love because they relate to them, they watch them because they think it is funny how some people actually compete with other 'for love.' There is an endless amount of reasons why a person is particularly interested in a show, everyone has their reasons.

Repeat Offenders

I agree with the point that many people who go into reality television often appear on other shows after they have finished the first show they appeared on. For example almost everyone who has been on MTV's "The Real World" has been on the sister show "Real World, Road Rules Challenge" In my opinion it is a little ridiculous that some reality stars can show hop from one lame TV show to another. It is funny to me how these people that make fools of themselves on national television are rewarded new contracts to new shows season after season.

Professional Reality Star

I don't believe that there are these professional RTV stars. Although, many of the popular reality tv cast find themselves in other shows, I don't think they are professional reality stars. At the same time I realize how some reality tv cast members use reality tv to make their way to landing bigger roles as an actor or actress. Some popular cast members from reality tv even get their own reality tv shows. But at the same time I don't believe that this makes them a professional reality tv star. The reason why these particular people continue to reappear is because the producers find that fans who follow the first show they appear on for that particular person will continue to follow them on other shows and will just raise the viewer count and raise the money going into the producers pocket.

RTV Stars

I have never really paid attention to the fact that some reality tv characters move to other shows. I'm sure they do this because they get paid well, and I'd probably do the same thing if I were them. Some of these people might be trying to make it big in acting or pursuing other careers so staying in the spotlight will keep them remembered. The Situation from Jersey Shore won't be on the show next season because he is pursuing an acting career. Some of these people use reality tv as a gateway to fame and fortune. Kate, from Jon and Kate Plus 8, has become virtually a superstar. She has paparazzi following her because of the divorce and she continues to go on shows such as Dancing With the Stars. I'm sure she has made enough money to hire nannys to help out with her children but I wonder how being away from her kids to shoot a show such as the aforementioned will affect her kids growing up if she continues this lifestyle. If she is constantly on TV and away from home, her kids will remember that her mom was never there growing up. Maybe this isn't the case but I feel like it should be something that is looked into further. We do become attached to some of the characters on RTV and we follow them from show to show because we like them. Television series purposely get the characters that they think viewers will watch, it all makes sense. And as a character, if they are paying you enough, why not do it?

"Professional" RTV stars?

Initially, no person on a reality show is professional. Actually, I don't really think they ever become "professionals" per say. I think that they just become better at giving producers what they want. Initially they are chosen through a series or interviews and audition tapes etc. but of course that doesn't necessarily mean that the contestant is going to act how they want them to on the actual show. Once they "prove themselves entertaining" other producers and show inventors see that and want them. Having a person from a previous show also usually boosts ratings since people that are attracted from the contestant from the previous show tend to follow the contestant wherever they go. This is also why people who want to become actors or singers come onto these shows: to get the exposure. I don't really follow RTV so I'm not sure of other instances where the "stars" transferred to another show. But all in all I don't think anyone can technically be considered professional, only good at being on the shows.

we like it cause its real?

I think we like reality tv not only because its "real" (which most of it isn't anyways) but for many different reasons. People want to see others in the lifestyle they wish they had, or they want to see others struggle so that they feel better about their own lives. Sometimes they just watch to get a laugh at the idiots acting ridiculous. We are drawn to many different types of characters because they are unlike us... I think that is the main draw. Everyone is curious about other people, and watching reality television is an easy gateway to that.
