RTV

To me, Reality TV is any show that is "unscripted", so televised events such as sports games and game shows could fall under this genre. However, the term "reality t.v." has been narrowed down to include shows which make an attempt gain popularity through the drama that people cause on the shows. The ironic part is that many of these reality t.v. shows are scripted, so in my opinion that really takes the reality part out of the equation.

You clearly point to how complex the definition of reality TV can be. I'm looking for you to narrow it down just a little bit more or to offer some insight into how we might narrow the definition. Or, if you think the term "reality TV" is necessarily broad, why?

I think 'unscripted' is a pretty accurate way of defining reality tv. But no show is 100% unscripted. Every director or producer has a general direction that they want the show to go. But 'unscripted' or 'unpredicted' is the best way i can describe RTV.

well... i agree with you in the idea that television shows deemed with the title "reality" should consist of unscripted dialogue and action. The fact is, however, that the genre of "reality" television has been turned into a (like it or not) kind of thing. For example, it doesn't really matter if people think jersey shore is scripted or not.. People just watch it to be entertained

I agree with you when you say that reality television shows are geared towards popularity. That's really what it comes down to whether we like it or not. The most popular show will get the highest ratings and will stay around for another season that beats out other competition. The quality of reality television has ceased to exist in recent times.
