What is reality tv?
I believe reality tv is a genre that consists of any type of show that is unscripted and doesn't include any actors. Reality tv is also unpredictable. I don't think game shows and news programs and are reality tv because they are just more of and entertainment and informational programming. To me sports is considered reality tv because of real it is and you never know what's going to happen next. Even the players on the court or field can tell you who's going to win ahead of time. For example just look at Florida State beating the number one team in the nation or UConn women's basketball team losing for the first time in 9o games. Like all of sports theses two things were unscripted and unpredictable. There are also a number of sports reality tv shows like Shaq Vs. Where Shaquille O'Neal goes against a variety of athletes in their respective sport. Talk shows are not considered reality tv because they are sometimes scripted.

This is good Jerry. I am especially interested in the notion that reality TV shows are defined by who makes up the cast. Is the cast necessarily everyday people?
I agree with what you are saying about sports. I definitely think that sports are RTV becuase no one knows what the outcome is going to be. But as far as RTV having no actors, isn't always as true. Yes, the people aren't "actors" in the normal sense, but they aren't exactly normal peeople. They only reason they are put on shows is becuase they will behave in ways that will make people talk the next day. They are looking for people who will make drama or a good story for profits sake, even if it means that people have to behave or act in ways they normally wouldnt.
I agree with you that reality tv has to be unscripted and unpredictable. I also definitely agree with you that sports are a major for of reality tv. Sports always keep that audience guess because nobody knows what is going through the minds of the players while they are out on the field or court. For example nobody expected that the Packers would completely kill the Falcons with a score of 48-21 this past weekend and make it to the championship game!
