RTV is...
To me, RTV is any show that is unscripted. It comtains people who are just being themselves and going about their normal routine. Whether it is a show about someone's life and their interaction with others or a sports game. No one knows that is going to happen or what the outcome will be or what decision someone is going to make. To me, an RTV show is a show such as almost anything on mtv, where it documents people lives like on True Life, or puts people into situations, such as Jersey Shore. Or a sports game, because with that no one can predict the outcome or what play the team will do. I wouldn;t consider a talk show or game show RTV because with a talk show, the host already knows what questions he/she is going to ask and will try to lead the conversation in a certain direction. And with a game show, the host knows whats going on and can control what happens.

I agree with your opinion on game shows, for the very simple reason that every aspect of the show is being controlled, from the contestants, to the question, down to the tone of the question. It seems more analogous to a reenactment, than reality.
I pretty much have the same opinion, except for talk shows. Although the host knows the question and may TRY to steer the conversation somewhere, i think the response to the statement/question is up to the person it is being told to and ultimately can still stay "real" even though the conversation topics are being controlled.
To play devil's advocate here... do you think the producers of Jersey Shore or True Life know what message they want to get across beforehand, and therefore edit to accommodate this purpose? If a show is unscripted but heavily edited, is this still considered RTV?
To a point, any show is edited and especially when it is a show that goes and records someone's life, it is going to be edited much more so. They are recording for 24 hours a day and we only see about 45 minutes worth of material. It is still RTV because it is those people going about their daily lives and reacting to the situations that they get themselves into or are pushed into.
I've just been reminded of the flaw in scientific observation, everything from people to animals, even in there own environment act differently while being observed. Jane Goodall had to spend years in the jungle with primates until they would act naturally. So how then is any form of TV reality?
well said here Zack.
