I decided to pick intervention as my show of choice for this assignment.
Why you may ask? Simply because A&E makes very gritty, yet entertaining reality tv shows.
Plus I guess I sort of relate with the destruction that drugs can bring upon a family and/or friends.
This particular episode was about a guy who was addicted pain killers and apparently "loved drugs." The guy was clearly addicted when he couldn't function without the drugs and even went on violent rampages when he didn't get what he wanted.I will discuss 6 key aspects about the show.
1.the purpose of the show is to clearly to inform. How do I know? I don't think they intend for comedic or over the top craziness like Jersey Shore, the makers of the show instead show how depressing life is when you are addicted to drugs, alcohol, etc. and the horrible effects it has not only on the addicted individual but the entire family as well.
2.Intended audience is adults, they like to be informed and can probably relate with the experience the show has to offer.
3.A&E endorses the show, this says a lot because A&E is known for gritty reality tv shows, this show definitely fits the bill.
4.the show fits in with reality and drama. The reality is dramatic, but it isn't meant to look scripted (if it is.)
5.The structure of the show is a different character each episode, it's not episodic. The character always thinks they are filming a documentary on addiction and they are seen doing various questionable acts to get drugs or abuse them. Then eventually the intervention in sues about half way through the episode if not a little farther along. Then we see if the character has progressed since the beginning of the episode through an epilogue.
6.The font of the title of the series is pretty bold, yet bleak, as if to give it that depressing aspect of the show (which is appropriate.) The music is pretty depressing as well and goes perfectly well with the documentary style of filming (one on one interviews, etc.) The tone is a dramatic one.

My sister loves this show, me and my parents don't know why. I think it's seeing all the stories of how people got into them and how they can't stop doing them. I don' t think it is scripted at all. It's normal people who get stuck in these drugs. I don't really know what gritty means but I think by the way it sounds this show is exactly that. It freaks me out what some people do to themselves.
I think the purpose is also to inform. But maybe awareness to because it shows what can happen when someone has an addiction. The mood is definitely serious because it is a serious topic.
