Television Changing
Both shows are about the idea that men do not have to choose one partner to settle down with. In the Girls Next Door, Playboy creator, Hugh Hefner lives his life of luxury, both sexual and financial, with three different girlfriends. For the first few seasons, the girlfriends were comprised of Holly, Bridget, and Kendra, but at this point, the three have already been replaced. From the clip that I have seen of the Sister Wives, it seems to be the same concept, however it is about marriage rather than relationships. Both of these shows seem to aim towards bringing awareness to non-monogamous relationships and show the change in our society. Slowly, things such as polygamous marriages are going to become accepted by society. For now, however, the show will continue to receive a lot of bashing because it conveys something that is not expected or normal according to society's standards. The Girls Next Door did not receive such negative views because it was solely for enjoyment purposes. Boys and men enjoyed the show because of the "hot" girls and everyone thought it was okay for Hugh Hefner to pull such a stunt because he is the creator of a nude magazine. No one expected Hugh to ever settle down and marry all of his girlfriends. Sister Wives, on the other hand, shows average people living lives with multiple wives and the emotional issues that come with it. Personally, I found the show to be disgusting and found a hard time watching it and processing the fact that all of the women were the man's wives. For now, it isn't something that is morally acceptable.
