Wife Swap relies on stereotypes because that’s how they base who the want to swap. One episode was a family that was really religious and the other family was not religious at all. Switching the wives caused a huge commotion because the religious one really did not like the fact that the other family did not practice any form of religion. They stereotype groups rather than people. Yes they stereotype families most episodes are rich family vs. poor family or rocker family vs. peaceful family. The show portrays women not really in a bad light but it portrays more how stereotypes can really affect families and views people have.

The more controversial something is, the more people pay attention to it. It's an easy but annoying marketing scheme used by entertainment corporations. If the show switched wives from similar families, where would the conflict be? It would be more like a documentary at that point, and people who watch reality tv don't want content that's presented in an educational style.
